POLAR asked:
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought you could not pass the pace car under caution. He was coasting to save gas, but he still passed the pace car on the first lap of the caution.
Answer… The only way i know that it is legal to pass pace car is, if you are a lap down (-1), then you can pass pace car and return to last position. If you are on pit road and make it out in front of the pace car then you can return to last position, and do not have to go slow, you are allowed to reach top speed until last position is reached. If you exit pit road behind pace car, you must stay on the skirt until last car passes you, and then you must get behind it. This puts you in last place, and down a lap (-1). Once green flag is dropped then you may attempt to run through the field of cars, pass the leader and move into last place again, but this time you are not a lap behind, you are just last place. If you begin to move up in the field, then you are gaining positions. Once at the front you are the leader. Just for the ones who needed to understand the whole picture about passing pace car, and being a lap down. They both are connected, most of the time…
